We believe having a healthy discipline of reading good books is asset in growing as disciples of Jesus Christ.  Below are our Elder's suggested reading as well as other topical recommendations.  It is not an exhaustive list but reading that we have found helpful.  Though we believe these resources will be edifying to you, we may not necessarily agree with every point they make.  Always read with care and discernment.

 

Pastor Jake's Recommendations:

  • Redemption, Accomplished & Applied (John Murray) - A deep and rich study of the significance of Christ’s atoning work on the cross.
  • Confessions (Augustine) - Part autobiography, part theological reflection… set in the form of prayer to God, a moving classic of God’s sovereign grace at work on a resistant sinner.
  • Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties, and Roots (J.C. Ryle) - A comprehensive and convicting exploration of the essential need for holiness in the Christian life.
  • Desiring God (John Piper) - A passionate argument for the joyful centering of one’s whole life on God for His own sake.
  • Habits of Grace: Enjoying Jesus Through the Spiritual Disciplines (David Mathis) - A very helpful primer to grow in one’s faith through the simple daily habits that put us in the path of God’s rich grace.

Elder Philip's Recommendations:

  • Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life (Donald S. Whitney) - A helpful and enriching examination of spiritual disciplines and their usefulness in growing in Godliness. 
  • Knowing God (JI Packer) An accessible and thorough guide to looking at the attributes of God, a great help in the Christians desire to know their God.
  • The Discipline of Grace (Jerry Bridges)This book examines how the biblical principles of living by grace and personal discipline exist with and benefit each other.  A helpful book. 
  • Fistful of Heroes: Christians at the Forefront of Change  (John Pollock) - This encouraging book contains various biographical sketches of Christians in history and their stories of coming to faith and subsequent responese to calls to service and ministry.
  • Tactics (Greg Koukl) - A helpful guide to knowing how to discuss your Christian convictions at home, work, school and in personal interactions daily.

Elder Alejandro's Recommendations

  • The Masculine Mandate: God's Calling to Men (Richard Phillips) - Encourages Christian men to look back to Genesis 2:15 to see what it means to work and keep.
  • Confessions (Augustine) - Autobiography of Augustine of Hippo, who moved from a life of self-gratification, to then seek worldly wisdom to finally find himself captivated by God’s mercy and renewal. A true classic.
  • A Tale of Two Sons (John MacArthur) - By looking at Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. Explores what repentance looks like, and also highlights God’s forgiveness.
  • Sola Scriptura - The Protestant Position on the Bible (Joel Beeke, Sinclair Ferguson,
    Robert Godfrey, et Al.) - This is a biblical and historical defence of the doctrine of Sola Scriptura
  • The Holiness of God (R.C. Sproul) - The Holiness of God is an attribute that is dismissed many times by most people.  In this book, R.C. Sproul looks into what the Holiness of God is and its implications for life.
  • Foxe’s Book of Martyrs (John Fox) - History of persecuted Christians, from the beginning of the Christian church to the time of the Reformation.
